In the year of Expo Milano 2015, the theme of which will be Feeding the Planet: Energy for Life, Giulio Iacchetti suggest a reflection on essentials of anonymous design in the food area, through an exhibition K-RATION Meals for Soldiers in Action. Far from ambiguous trends of a certain food design that often sees the image of food in spite of their true function, feeding, the exhibition “K-Ration” at the Milan Triennale, focuses its attention on these particular food packages, which are authentic study cases for the world of design. They respond to strict parameters of design and function, such as minimal size and attention to detail and form, as well as colour coding, but also for their energetic and caloric efficiency.
Through a selection of exemplary cases, the exhibition illustrates the various types of rations that have been developed independently by each army, while also showing how the military are assisted when fighting at the front or in extreme situations.
Among the rations displayed, there are also the preparations part of the “bonus food” dedicated to italian astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti, currently on board at the International Space Station.
